big ono bread downtown memphisAt the market, the Big Ono serves hula bread, volcano loaves, butter and lava rolls, cookies, cinnamon rolls and scones. At their  downtown Memphis bakery  (just a few blocks north on Front, 116 Front, across from Auto Zone), they open at 6am serving all the same delicious, fresh baked varieities along with fresh brewed Kona coffee. Big Ono is one of the few bakeries in Memphis that make fresh bread daily. That means that all of Big Ono’s bread is as fresh as can be. The scones, Lava Rolls (sort of like cinnamon rolls), cookies, and filled cupcakes are made in the shop daily.  What captures the Hawaiian style is the Polynesian recipe for the slightly sweet dough. Don't miss the cookies including tropical oatmeal, coconut butter stars or tropical chocolate chip cookies. Big Ono also sells croutons in three flavors.

Big Ono has its roots in the Aloha State. In 1995, Montgomery, who was living in Memphis, got a call from friend Willie Durham Jr., who was doing marketing for a fledgling bakery in Hawaii. He asked Montgomery to fly out as a restaurant consultant. The two weren't able to save the bakery, but when it went under, they bought it, renamed it, and Big Ono was born. After operating two successful Big Ono shops on the island of Oahu, Durham and Montgomery decided in 2005 to open one on the mainland -- in Memphis. The dream was finally realized this year, but not as imagined by the friends.
